Creativity: Fine and Performing Arts

R. Lee Kennedy, professor, lighting design

The performing arts enrich the creative lives of our students and make up an increasingly vital, vibrant area of growth in Arts & Sciences. While our programs in the Fine and Performing Arts have grown considerably in recent years, demand from our students continues to outstrip what we can offer.

Research and creativity in the arts require good production facilities, materials, technical support, and venues for exhibition and performance. The disciplines of studio art, drama, dance, and music also need increased funding for faculty to carry on their work.

Your gift will help provide the additional resources the arts deserve and need. Here’s how:

  • The campaign will allows us to construct a new music building with teaching, office, practice, and performance spaces.
  • The campaign will allow us to offer a broader and deeper array of arts courses to our undergraduates; recruit talented faculty in art, drama and music; and enhance programs for students and the community.
  • With campaign support, we will build an essential addition to the Culbreth Theatre and advance our nascent dance program.
  • We will establish a new fifth-year program in Arts Administration.
  • The Campaign will create the College Arts Scholars program enabling us to recruit more of the most talented high school arts students to the College.
  • Campaign gifts will fund performance groups including the Jazz Ensemble, New Music Ensemble, Early Music Ensemble, University Singers, Charlottesville-University Symphony Orchestra, and the Cavalier Marching Band.
  • We will integrate the Virginia Film Festival more fully into the College experience, with courses related to film theory and production.
  • The campaign will help digitize large portions of the art department’s visual resources center and support research and travel for our faculty and student performers and artists.
