Scientific Discovery: Scientific Education and Research

John Nesselroade, psychology professor

U.Va. enjoys an enviable reputation for developing undergraduates who go on to earn doctoral degrees in the sciences. Our graduate students work at the forefront of scientific innovation. Building additional capacity for science education through investments in faculty and research will strengthen our ability to produce the scientists, mathematicians and scientific innovations on which our modern, technological society depends.

To attract more of the best students, we will design and build programs with recognized scientists, great facilities, and opportunities for students to engage actively in the sciences. Here’s how your gift will help:

  • The campaign will give graduate students financial support that exceeds the competitive offers of other universities.
  • Campaign donors will help establish professorships, support faculty research and travel, and expand the chances for students to conduct research alongside a faculty mentor.
  • With the campaign, we will mount courses and research efforts that examine the most pressing societal issues of our time such as sustainability, renewable energy, global warming and health.
  • Building on the success of the new College Science Scholars program, campaign donors also will help us aggressively recruit more top high-school science students to U.Va.
